This year's theme, "The Evolution of Freighting on the Santa Fe Trail" will examine how freighting developed during the nearly 60 years that trade goods were carried over this historic transportation route. It will also focus on the economic, social and cultural backgrounds of those who participated in the trade back and forth between Missouri and Santa Fe. For Information and a tentative schedule contact Linda Revello, trailassn@gbta.net.
The 2009 Symposium will be held in the Arrow Rock/Boonslick Country of Central Missouri. The Boonslick country provided the first traders to Santa Fe and was the homeland to several prominent Santa Fe Traders including William Becknell, Alphonso Wetmore, Josiah Gregg, and Meredith Miles Marmaduke.
Activities are anticipated to take place in the area of Boonville and New Franklin and will also include Arrow Rock and trail sites to the Marshall to the Waverly/Lexington areas. The preliminary theme is the cultural interaction of Anglo-American traders, Hispanic traders, and Osage Indians in the Boonslick. A special program on the roots of the “Missouri Mule” is being explored, as is the possibility of period re-enactors.
It is anticipated that there will be no shortage of speakers on historical topics and that the tours of Santa Fe Trail sites will be exceptional.
Plan to join us September 24-27, 2009 in the beautiful Boonslick Country of Missouri - the birthplace of the Santa Fe Trail.
