Pictured above are two views of a nineteenth-century "tire bender" for iron wagon tires. These half-ton pieces of blacksmithing equipment were designed to convert red-hot flat iron stock into curved shapes that would eventually be welded and shrunk onto wagon wheels. They were mighty useful pieces of equipment for fixing things on the trail, but they were too heavy to tote along.
