Welcome to the Heart of the Flint Hills Chapter Page
of the Santa Fe Trail Association!

“The warmest description will scarce convey to the untraveled readers even a faint picture of this very beautiful grove…A crystal stream meanders over its pebbly bottom while the sun blazes upon the surrounding desert we sat…fished, bathed, read, sang, talked of home, and of the strange country we were about to visit, of the wild travel we had yet to encounter.”

— Matt Field, Council Grove, 1839

Planned Events of the Heart of the Flint Hills Chapter

---Trail Ride News - once again, we plan to gather at Larned on June 7th. There will be a tour of local sites that evening and on the morning of the 8th. We plan to leave Larned on the afternoon of the 8th and head toward Pawnee Rock. We have attached the registration packet to this newsletter. Please send all registrations and fees to Joleen Day, 114 County Rd. 335, Council Grove, Kansas 66846 or email her at jday125@hotmail.com no later than May 20th 2007! There is a $10 discount for those who register before May 20th.

There are a couple items we need to mention concerning the ride:

  • First, parking will be tight at Ellinwood and the Stone Corral school. Please park in an organized fashion, much like we did last year. This conserves space and helps everyone get in and out without too much trouble.
  • Second, we need to be VERY SURE there is no alcohol on the bus. You can drink it before you get on, and after you get off, but please not while you are on the bus. Our liability increases dramatically if an accident would happen and alcohol is involved. We would also run the risk of being denied future access to the bus. If we didn’t have a bus to forward people, I doubt we would be able to sponsor a ride like this. I don’t think this is too bad an inconvenience, and I really appreciate your cooperation!

We will have local speakers at several of the camps during the ride. Also, the museum at Lyons is a wonderful place and we will be able to spend some time there. Several of the campsites are quite a ways from a town, so plan your supplies accordingly. We will be sending out directions to each campsite in the next couple weeks. This year Carol plans to pack her cell phone – email her for the number.

---Our chapter has received a speaker’s grant to help bring Leo Oliva to the Kaw Mission in October. We are including the Kaw Mission presentation schedule again in case any of you want the information again.  We encourage all of you to attend as many as possible.

  • May 24th - They Rallied on a Hill: The 1868 Cheyenne-Kanza Skirmish. Presented by Ron Parks.
  • August 23rd - What the Seas Left Behind: The Rocks and Fossils of the Flint Hills. Presented by Rex Buchanan.
  • September 27th - They Would Destroy All the Game They Could. Presented by Clive Siegle.
  • October 25th - Santa Fe Trail Traveler’s View of the Flint Hills. Presented by Leo E. Oliva.
  • November 15th - Flint Hills Cowboys: Tales of the Tallgrass Prairie. Presented by Jim Hoy.

--Heart of the Flint Hills Chapter Meeting - October 25, 2007, 7 pm
Burlingame, KS, Santa Fe Café on the Santa Fe Trail.

Meet at the Café for dinner and the meeting will start around 7 p.m. The main topic will be the “dig” at Wilmington. Bring any information you might have about the school and surrounding area as this will help. New SFTA Manager Harry Myers will be at the meeting and wants to hear from members how the association can assist the chapter. He is also anxious to meet members and to see old friends.
